Absolute Truth - Commentary Notes

[Running commentary, notes and stories behind The War For Infinity by Adam WarRock]

I’ve always had the idea of a song where the verses would basically mirror the generic plots of superhero movies. I got my chance to do it on “Absolute Truth,” where the first verse basically explains the plot of say, a Spider-Man or Iron Man, and the second verse explains the plot of a Spider-Man 2 or Iron Man 2, respectively. If you listen, those are the two movie franchises I was taking cues from.

I sat on the verses for this song for a while, mostly because Ruckus delivered a beat with this progressive beat for the hook that I just had NO idea what to do with. I actually pulled the title “Absolute Truth” from the first few pages of The Infinity Gauntlet, I believe that Thanos says it to Mephisto in the beginnning (I could be wrong, I don’t have it in front of me). I just built the hook around those words. The hook was an attempt to sort of blur the focus from Adam to the villain that would be introduced in the next track, talking about how the difference between a hero and a villain is slim, totally based off of chance.

I basically told Ruckus I wanted a beat that sounded like the soundtrack to Adam flying from space and burning through the atmosphere. These were conversations we’d regularly have, I’d say ridiculous things and he’d just nod and say, “Okay,” and then come back with a beat that made sense every time.

Other notes:

  • There are three people talking in the beginning. I mean, they’re all me, but I remember me, Tribe and Ruckus having a conversation, wondering if it was one guy saying “Up in the sky” and “No it’s…!” and how similar the delivery should be. But I always intended for it to be three separate people. These are the things I think about.
  • The track is basically like a rubber band with each successive line. I always intended for them to sort of leak over each other (it’s an old trick that Cormega used to use a lot that I fell in love with as a kid. Listen to “What’s Ya Poison” by Mobb Deep & Cormega to hear the definitive version of the punch-in verse by ‘Mega) it’s a nightmare to do live. So don’t expect to see it any time soon.
