Check out Rat Queens, by Kurtis Wiebe & Roc Upchurch (Image Comics)

Y’know, with all the comics I read, it’s weird to think how rare it is that a NEW comic can come along and really hook me. Everything I read is either derivative of some kind of nostalgia-based character or title, or it’s based on me following a creator I’m already familiar with to a new work. A ton of my friends had been on my case to read Rat Queens, and them trying to sell it to me didn’t really work (mostly because I’m not really a fantasy fan). But I finally had some time to sit down and read all 5 issues of Rat Queens, and man. I loved it. Super violent, super stylish, a great story with incredible art. Plus, a lot of cursing.  I’m not doing an incredibly eloquent job of selling it (on the road, gotta post quick!), but you should really just pick it up and read it. It’s incredible. Image Comics, killing it.

Check out All-New She-Hulk #1

In a weird way, She-Hulk was a book (and a song about the book) that I was always meant to write. For those who don’t know my personal history, I used to be a lawyer. I practiced for 3 years as a litigator in Washington, DC before I became Adam WarRock. True story, here’s proof. So I’ll admit, I’ve kind of always wanted to read a comic about a superhero that also was a practicing lawyer: whether it was Daredevil, She-Hulk or whoever. I always thought that the day-to-day lawyering (i.e. not the courtroom cases that Murdock was always involved in) would be interesting to see in that context. I’ll admit, I’m biased.

So when I found out that Charles Soule, also a former lawyer, was going to write a She-Hulk book and focus on her day-to-day grind as a lawyer, I was excited. But I don’t think I could’ve expected a book as good as this. I’ve never really cared about She-Hulk to this extent, but with the stories that Soule is writing and Pulido’s amazing art, I have to say that All-New She-Hulk has basically become my favorite comic, period.  It’s Hawkeye-level good. So even if you never thought you’d care about She-Hulk as a character, or a Marvel character who was also a lawyer, give it a try. You might be surprised.

I’ve had a great time making these All-New Marvel NOW! songs, and thanks to some of the creators (Slott, Allred, Smith, Amanat, et. al.) who supported and retweeted/blogged the songs about their respective books. The cool thing about Marvel right now is that the creators, from young to old, are so supportive of fan culture like this, and I’ve honestly only ever had positive experiences interacting with them. Hell, some of them have even become my friends.

So go out, buy some comics, and sit down and enjoy. They’re pretty awesome right now. And hey, come see me live!

Check out All-New Ghost Rider #1

I am on the road today, so I’ll have to be brief. But let me just say that this new Ghost Rider is without a doubt, one of the biggest surprises for me in the All-New NOW! slate. That Tradd Moore art is incredible, the design of the issues so far is striking, and the issues of Robbie dealing with the socio-economic and racial/ethnicity-based struggles via the police, his neighborhood, his family - it speaks to me way more than I ever thought a Ghost Rider comic could. That’s kind of the beauty of a lot of these Marvel comics (in the same way that Ms. Marvel book touches on similar issues), they’re not only about a flaming ghost skull-headed spirit of vengeance, but also about so much more than that. So go check it out.

Tomorrow: She-Hulk

Check out All-New Ms. Marvel #1

There’s been a lot of talk about diversity in comics, whether that means race/ethnicity, sexuality, gender, age, or whatever other identity categorization you care to frame that word around. “Diversity” has become sort of a buzz word in most media, from the multiracial Benetton-like ads that corporations plaster everywhere, to forced-but-necessary debates on certain topics of varying levels of controversy and import. As the personal blueprint of the world continues to become more varied, more delineated, more diverse, it runs the danger of becoming a means to an end of appearing more aware of these issues than actually giving a damn about any of it.

A part of me asks: so? Not to say that any means justifies any good end, but speaking as someone of a minority community, I kinda…don’t care if it’s all for the appearances of diversity. That is, so long as the media being created is…y’know, GOOD. And take it from an Asian American person who grew up loving Jubilee as his favorite X-Man, these things matter. Seeing a representation of yourself, mirrored in your favorite pop cultural media – more importantly, seeing it presented in a way that’s not insulting, demeaning, degrading, belittling — not just lip service. It means something. It’s deeply affecting, and in a lot of ways life changing.

This is all to say that having the new Ms. Marvel be a Pakistani Muslim American can be accused by many as reading like a ploy, to tick off a bunch of boxes in any corporate diversity training program. And…well, I don’t care. Because the book is good; and if the book’s good, then it becomes less about Ms. Marvel being Muslim, and more about the fact that “it doesn’t matter that Ms. Marvel is Muslim.” or the fact that she’s Pakistani. And that, as much as a book that focuses on the fact that Kamala Khan is a kid, who deals with kid stuff, and gets these superpowers and tries her best to do good with them. Like any other superhero. And isn’t that a bit weird to say, that she’s “just like any other superhero,” being that superheroes are fantastical and amazing in their own right.

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you any of this. You can read about the reaction to G. Willow Wilson’s new book here, and here, and in almost every other news outlet taking their swing at why it’s important. Other than the fact that the comic itself, at the core of Wilson and Amanat’s creation is good, and that Alphona’s art is great in and of itself.

It’s just another example of what comics are capable of doing: starting a conversation. Being a hero can’t be easy. See: every superhero story of all time. We ask these heroes to do what’s hard, because we know they can. It only seems natural we can ask them to help some people show that whatever religion, sexuality, gender, race or ethnicity you are, whether you’re an alien or a mutant or a robot or whatever: we’re all not that different.

See? It sort of sounds like an after-school special. There’s really no way around it. So just listen to the song, and I hope you dig it. Go read Ms. Marvel. I think it (and what Marvel has been doing lately) is everything that’s right about Big Two comics right now.

Mon: “Norrin Radd” (link)

If you’re an avid Marvel comics reader, you’ve probably said something close to this to any of your other Marvel comics-reading friends:

keypeele

Seriously. If you would’ve told me last year that one of my favorite comics right now would be MOON KNIGHT? I would’ve thought you’d lost your goddamn mind. But I guess it’s no surprise that you can put Warren Ellis on any character, and it will be amazing. Add Declan Shalvey, a guy whose art I’ve loved since the days of Comictwart, and you’ve got all the makings of a book that is going to be great enough to live up to the mantle of Marc Spector himself.

It’s weird, Moon Knight’s always been this character that has this weird cult following, but it’s not like you can walk up to ANY comic fan and say, “Hey, tell me what you know ‘bout Moon Knight?” To be honest, the only experience I have with Moon Knight is the 1989 volume that ended at issue 60, and even back then there was never any kind of through narrative, with the title going through multiple cancellations and changes.

But seriously, if you haven’t read the All-New Moon Knight series, seriously. Even if you don’t give a damn about Moon Knight as a character; even if for some reason Warren Ellis isn’t enough to sell you on a book: go get this. It’s great.
